FAQ
How do I come up with a name for a nonprofit or community group?
Lead with the mission, not one program, year, or street, so the name still fits when you grow or move. Say each candidate aloud and have someone spell it back: donors and members need to find you without a perfect spelling. A short, warm word beats a long descriptive phrase that gets shortened anyway.
Is a .org necessary, or should I use a .com?
Neither is required. The .org extension reads as mission and trust for nonprofits and causes, while .com is the most recognized and what people type by default. A common move is to register both and redirect one to the other so donors land in the right place whichever they guess. We rank .com first and show .org too.
How do I make sure a community or org name is not already taken or trademarked?
A free domain is not legal clearance. Run a USPTO trademark knockout search, check your state nonprofit and business registry for a conflicting entity, and search Candid (formerly GuideStar) for other charities using the name. Then confirm the matching social handle is open before you commit.
